A little girl, dressed like an angel, is about to fly at midnight in Giugliano in honor of the Virgin Mary ( It is a tradition that was celebrated in the United States as well during the turn of the century by Neapolitans and Sicilian immigrants. Festivities start in the morning and the actual flight takes place during the night. Giugliano is a town with almost 120,000 inhabitants but it is so close to Naples that it is considered part of the city metropolitan area. The celebrations for Our Lady of Peace, today, started at 9:30PM (3:30PM Eastern Time) and it will be visible live on the site until 1:00AM (7:00PM Eastern Time) or through FaceBook and twitter with the hashtag “flight 2013”. From the stage set up in Piazza Annunziata, Enzo Niola and Carmen Cadalt will talk about this ancient tradition leading to the midnight flight.

The Church of the Annunziata was built in the 16th century. It is home to several paintings by artists such as Massimo Stanzione and Carlo Sellitto, and to the Chapel of Madonna della Pace (Our Lady of Peace).
