1400 PEOPLE SAVED BY MARCONI’S INVENTION

January 23, 1909. The White Star liner Republic which left New York yesterday afternoon, with 441 passengers bound for Naples was rammed before 6am by another vessel, the Florida, bound for New York from Naples with 900 in the steerage, twenty miles south of Nantucket. Her engine and boiler rooms were flooded through a hole torn in her side and she drifted helplessly. The wreck of the Republic is the most marvelous story of the sea in recent years By the use of the modern invention wireless telegraphy [by Guglielmo Marconi] the Republic was enabled to notify the shore and other ships of her dangerous plight and the souls aboard owe their lives to this fact. Thanks to Guglielmo Marconi's invention, their message arrived to the Baltic, another ship in the area.
